Smart Health Facilities

Smart Health Facilities are digitally enabled infrastructure and energy efficient solutions that address persistent operational challenges facing health systems, including supply chain logistics, medical waste management, health information systems, effective care delivery, pandemic preparedness and response and more.

Smart Health Facilities unlock the transformative potential of digital solutions at scale by deploying technologies tailored to local needs that address key health system gaps. Smart Health Facilities provides the tools and capacities to enable delivery of quality health services, and at the same time positioning health care workers as drivers of the process of climate-forward system strengthening.

UNDP, in collaboration with partners such as the Global Fund and Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance, supports these Smart Health Facilities transformations in three use-cases:

  • Warehouse and storage settings with remote monitoring capability and digital solutions to ensure viability of critical medical commodities supply chain management.
  • Health care delivery settings where solar energy systems can ensure effective functioning and support interoperable digital solutions for implementing national health programmes whilst addressing capacity gaps in service delivery.
  • Diagnostics and data systems to support disease surveillance, health management information systems and medical waste management.

The Digital Health for Development Hub will leverage UNDP expertise across different technical areas to enable effective and sustainable implementation of Smart Health Facilities solutions. The Hub will focus on:

  • Technical advisory support to UNDP Country Office-led infrastructure transformation for health system strengthening.
  • Capacity development, including use of cascading training models, training material and knowledge sharing through South-South cooperation with countries implementing Smart Health Facilities solutions.
  • Development of Smart Health Facilities toolkits, including on standards, assessment templates, manuals, guidance, standard operating procedures, troubleshooting, operation and maintenance manuals.
  • Partnering with Information and Technical Management units for design, procurement and implementation of technology-based solutions for health facilities.
  • Collaboration with the UNDP Sustainable Energy Hub on energy systems, solutions and innovative solar energy business models for health facilities.
  • Collaboration with the UNDP Sustainable Finance Hub on innovative financing platforms and instruments for Smart Health Facilities.
